Carbs and whether they are good or bad has become a national debate. But there are many misconceptions about carbs.

It seems that everyday there are more and more people starting a diet low in carbs. Besides them many others have decided that because of all the bad press that carbs have gotten of late that they should at the very least cut them out of their diet. There are others still that maintain that carbs are good and should be eaten in place of other things while dieting because of the fullness over a long period of time that they provide. But, how much do people really know about carbs? There are actually a lot of misconceptions that people have regarding carbs and sugar and how these effect weight gain.

Clearing up carb myths

As we well know, we have more then our share of obesity in this country. Many people attribute this problem to carbs and sugar and claim that it is he leading cause of obesity. What actually causes weight gain is consuming more calories than you burn off, pure and simple. Most people pack on the pounds by eating too much fat, not sugars. Many cakes, ice creams, and cookies get most of their calories from fat and not sugar. There is no conclusive evidence that suggest that eating carbs makes you feel more hungry or makes fat storage in the body easier.

When dieting it is very important to get the facts straight so that you do not sabotage your own diet unintentionally. And many people on a diet feel that the sugar from fruit is good while the sugar from candies is bad. But his too is not entirely true. The sugar in fruit is called fructose and the sugar used in candy is generally sucrose. But fructose does not have any advantage over sucrose, so really it doesn't matter whether something is sweetened with sugar or a fruit juice sweetener. the advantage to eating fruit instead of the candy, though, is the fiber and other nutrients that also come along with the fructose.
